Bad breath causes more than 90 million Americans to seek professional dental help every year. Clinically referred to as halitosis, bad breath is described as the pungent odour that originates from the mouth and nasal cavity. Like any other body odours, bad breath is caused by the millions of tiny microbes that live in the mouth. Bad breath can reveal a multitude of problems and is generally used as an indicator of one’s health and hygiene habits. Bad breath is caused by a number of factors, including poor dental hygiene, dental problems, dry mouth, diseases, and spicy foods.

Poor dental hygiene – This is one of the main causes of bad breath. Failing to carry out a proper brush-and-floss regimen, halitosis emerges from the decay of food particles stuck in the gums and those spaces in-between the teeth. As these particles decompose, they lead to the production of sulphuric vapours in the mouth such as hydrogen sulphide. Improper cleaning of dentures is also a cause of bad breath due to foreign (outside of the mouth) bacteria.

Dental problems – There are a number of internal mouth conditions that count as bad breath causes. Gingivitis, periodontitis and gum disease are just some of the few cached bad breath culprits. Gingivitis is basically gum irritation which is caused by the continuous build-up of bacterial plaque on the teeth. Periodontitis, on the other hand, occurs when gingivitis is at its worst and plaque-filled pockets appear between the gums and teeth. Similar bad breath causes are plaque build-up which, if left untreated for long periods of time, leads to gum disease.

Dry mouth – This is a medical condition called xerostomia that causes bad breath by limiting the amount of saliva that is produced in the mouth. Saliva is not only a natural lubricant, but it is also one of the best bad breath treatments there is for non-chronic cases. This situation occurs mostly during sleep which leads to the most common bad breath condition, ‘morning breath’. Sometimes use of certain medications leads to halitosis by causing dry mouth.

Diseases – Aside from the 80 to 90 percent that suffer from oral bad breath, there is a special 10 percent whose bad breath is more a result of other diseases in the body. For instance, cancer and a number of metabolic disorders can lead to bad breath. The bad breath caused in this case is a by-product of the chemical reactions that take place in the body. Diabetes, kidney and liver failure, and GERD lead to the production of various odours from the mouth that differ in the pungency. The first case, for instance, leads to a fishy bad breath while uncontrolled diabetes causes a sweet smell from the chemicals used.

Foods – The primary digestion location is in the mouth. As proteins and amino acids break down, certain odours are released. The most common bad breath causes in this category are spicy foods (especially onions and garlic) as well as low-carb diets. Low-carb diets lead to the production of ketones which cause bad breath. Such diets generally cause the body to burn its stores of fat for fuel which leads to ketosis, a situation where there is ketone build-up in the body. As they are being digested, the pungent oils present in them are absorbed into the body system and carried to the lungs where they give off bad odours when exhaled.

Though it can be an embarrassing condition, bad breath is a universal phenomenon. Bad breath causes are numerous; however, so are the bad breath remedies. All you have to do is search for the right treatment for you and enjoy fresh breath. There are generally two levels of bad breath treatments: the clinical and home remedies (or the herbal). Under the first category, treatment generally entails brushing, flossing, gargling, and other reactionary measures. In the second category, treatment involves preventative measures that revolve around various herbal products that can be found in the home.

Dealing with bad breath through oral hygiene:

Ninety percent of bad breath causes originate from the mouth. Thus dealing with this organ directly should eliminate or limit the pungency of the odours. The very first form of treatment for the mouth is brushing and cleaning the tongue. In fact, many dentists say that cleaning the tongue is more important while eradicating bad breath causes. The second form of action is ensuring that the mouth remains in balance at all times i.e. that it stays moist and healthy. Since dry mouth facilitates the growth of bad breath-causing bacteria, ensuring that the mouth is moist at all times will work towards eliminating bad breath. This can be easily done by chewing gum, sucking on mints or even having a cup of unsweetened green tea periodically.

Herbal and traditional bad breath remedies:

Bad breath causes can be treated with herbal home remedies. Herbal bad breath remedies for curing bad breath range from drinking unsweetened green teas or chewing on mint leaves to gargling with freshly squeezed lemon juice (or pineapple juice if one does not like lemons). Traditional Ayurvedic medicine advocates for betel leaf and Areca nut chewing so as to eliminate bad breath. However, care must be taken when opting for this option since both betel leaf and betel nut are mild stimulants that can be quite addictive if used repeatedly.

A lot of individuals suffer from bad breath, and as a result, are always looking for ways on how to get rid of bad breath. Bad breath is such a common problem that it is estimated that about 80 to 90 percent of all humans have suffered or are suffering from bad breath. There are quite a number of causes of bad breath, i.e. bacteria build-up, bad oral hygiene, bad breath as a symptom of an underlying medical condition, and so on. Halitosis, which is the medical term for the common name ‘bad breath’, has a number of causes which each have their own treatment, cure, or remedies options. This article will help you learn the various causes of bad breath, or halitosis, by listing the various bad breath germs and identifying different methods on how to get rid of bad breath.

Determining whether you suffer from bad breath:

Most people who suffer from bad breath are usually generally unaware of the fact that they do, and because bad breath is a very taboo subject among most people, it typically takes many people time to establish or realize that they have a problem and seek ways on how to get rid of bad breath. It is virtually impossible for most individuals to determine the severity of their bad breath. In most situations, testing one’s breath or asking a loved one to help in the process is usually the way most individuals establish they have a problem and work towards finding remedies. Bad breath is not only an embarrassing medical condition that necessitates treatment, but it is also cause for additional problems in people who suffer from it, like interference in one’s social and professional life, or even leading to additional, unwanted medical conditions.

Bad breath causes:

As mentioned above, other bad breath causes involving bacteria include the build-up of anaerobic bacteria taking over the bio-films, or coatings, on the teeth, tongue, and nasal passages. Science has identified that another major cause of bad breath is the accumulation of bacteria on the back of one’s tongue. So when maintaining your oral hygiene or trying to get rid of bad breath, it is advised that individuals not only concentrate on cleaning their teeth, including in-between them, but also their tongue. Getting rid of bad breath requires one to invest in good oral hygiene products like toothpaste, mouthwash, and dental floss, which are all products that are highly recommended to eliminate bad breath.

Bad breath may also be caused by xerostomia. Xerostomia is a medical term used to describe bad breath that results from a decreased level of saliva flow in the mouth. In other words, if one suffers from having a dry mouth, then their chances of suffering from bad breath are really high as well. One way of getting rid of bad breath caused by xerostomia is by keeping one’s mouth moist. Some people believe that another cause of bad breath is the type of food they eat. As such, these people believe that they can eliminate bad breath by avoiding certain foods like onions, garlic, and cheese, and so on. However, medical professionals are not of the same view and do not agree that avoiding certain foods and spices can be classified as bad breath remedies. Another cause of bad breath that is often overlooked is the use of antibiotics. Because antibiotics work towards eliminating both bad and good bacteria, this sometimes leads to decreased levels of bacteria that are necessary for the proper functioning of the human body. This elimination of bacteria sometimes leads to bad breath. As such, when on antibiotic medication for the treatment of other ailments, eating foods rich in good bacteria, such as yogurt or fermented foods, is helpful in eliminating bad breath.

Getting rid of bad oral odour:

The good news is that people can get rid of bad breath or even prevent it by following a few simple steps. Bad breath is usually caused by bad breath germs that live in one’s mouth. Because bad breath is mostly caused by bacterial purification in unclean mouths, individuals can usually eliminate bad breath by adopting more hygienic, better mouth-cleaning practices. Good oral hygiene is vital if trying to get rid of bad breath or battling bad breath halitosis. Establishing good oral hygiene will not only help keep bad breath germs away, but it will also help one identify whether or not the cause of the bad breath they are experiencing is due to bad oral hygiene (bacterial putrefaction) or due to other bad breath causes such as anaerobic bacteria invading coatings or bio-films on teeth, nasal passages, or tongue, or acidic reflux-related.

Bad breath should not be mistaken for a disease. It is simply a symptom that indicates either bad oral hygiene or presence of a disease either inside the mouth or outside (i.e. in other parts of the body like the stomach, throat, or even nasal passages.) If the above-mentioned remedies do not help cure the bad breath you are experiencing, it is always best to consult your doctor or dentist to help cure the causes of halitosis.

Bad breath is a condition that affects up to 90 million Americans and more people worldwide. Despite this, though, bad breath remedies are still practically experimental. Despite the formation of ISBOR, the International Society for Breath Odour Research, in 1996 and a conference on the same taking place in Germany in 2009, bad breath still remains one of those maladies that physicians can’t quite understand. Clinically referred to as halitosis, bad breath can be described as the presence of unpleasant odours originating from the mouth and nasal cavity. Given the number of individuals that suffer from this condition, it is estimated that about a third of all dentist visits are about seeking out bad breath remedies.

Bad breath is divided into two categories, transient and persistent, with the latter being the most severe form of breath halitosis. In the first instance, bad odours exhaled from the mouth generally disappear after implementing basic bad breath remedies such as brushing, chewing on mints or gargling mouthwash. ‘Morning breath’ and ‘tea/coffee breath’ fall into this transient halitosis category. Similar breath treatment will not work, however, for persistent or chronic bad breath. The 25 percent of the population that suffers from this particular form of halitosis usually need more than bad breath remedies. In this case the bad breath causes are usually health-related and could indicate a serious underlying issue.

Though they may not be able to agree on standard bad breath remedies, the one thing that both dentists and physicians can agree causes bad breath is the presence of bacteria in the oral cavity. The mouth is home to at least 600 different types of bad breath germs. Given the moist incubator-like environment found in the mouth, especially towards the back of the tongue, it’s no surprise that once left ‘unattended’, these bacteria lead to the formation of foul odours. Aside from this, tooth decay, gum disease, and nose and throat infections are also causes of bad breath. However, in the case of sinus infections, the smell is a bit different. It has also been discovered that there is a link between bad breath and the stomach. Bad breath stomach-originating bacteria are usually indicative of esophageal and digestive tract problems. Understanding the underlying causes of bad breath helps individuals to better understand the types of bad breath remedies used to treat the condition.

Bad breath-like body odour is not one of those things that people want to willingly disclose. However, the fact of the matter is, that breath halitosis affects almost everyone at some point in their life. For this reason alone, it is important to know the various types of bad breath remedies out there to prevent any future embarrassment.

1. The first, most effective cure or bad breath remedy is maintaining good oral hygiene. By regularly brushing teeth, flossing, using medicated or approved mouthwashes, and tongue scraping, it is possible to keep the worst of halitosis at bay. In fact, cleaning the tongue is the most important of the three bad breath remedies as most bad breath germs are located at the back of the tongue. The worst case of bad breath you’d get under these conditions would simply be after-meal odours that can be effectively dealt with by sucking on mints or chewing gum. It is generally recommended to brush, floss, and tongue clean twice a day.

2. Chewing gum is also another form of bad breath remedy as it helps keep the mouth moist. Dry mouth, which is generally the cause of most transient bad breath, causes bacteria to build up at the back of the tongue. If it is impossible to brush or rinse the mouth after a meal, then this bad breath treatment should suffice. Chewing generally prompts the salivary glands to produce saliva which is one of the best bad breath remedies as it contains anti-bacterial properties that can be used to flush germs out of the mouth.

3. To ensure that you have fresh breath (or at least avoid bad breath) throughout the day, you should avoid foods that cause bad breath. Foods with copious amounts of garlic, onions, spices, as well as coffee, tobacco, and alcohol should be avoided. Eating of high-carb food is also recommended. Maintaining a low-carb, high-protein diet usually prompts the body to burn stored fat as fuel as opposed to using up carbs to provide energy. This conversion process leads to the build-up of ketones in the body (a process called ketosis) which are exhaled through the breath. Needless to say, ketones do not smell good.

4. Drinking lemon juice or green tea are also great forms of bad breath remedies. Though considered more of a home remedy for bad breath, they are still as effective as the other methods if not more as they also have other added health benefits. Gargling fresh-squeezed lemon or drinking unsweetened Fenugreek seed tea is an excellent way to cure bad breath or promote fresh breath.

There are a number of tried and tested methods to cure bad breath with bad breath remedies ranging from the severely clinical to home remedies as well. It is generally suggested that you search for the best treatment method that works for you to ensure that you can have fresh breath all day long. In cases where none of these remedies seem to be working, then you should probably see a doctor as there may be a serious underlying medical condition causing your chronic halitosis.
